SKUs are the basic building blocks of products within SES. A SKU can be anything that you charge for in a product's plan such as cloud infrastructure, software licenses, or support fees.

SKUs within SES can be metered or unmetered. A metered SKU means that it is charged on a subscription basis over a period of hours, weeks, days, months, or years. An unmetered SKU is charged on a onetime basis, when the plan is purchased. SKUs are powerful in that they allow you to turn on-demand charges for cloud infrastructure into discrete items that are chargeable over a specific time period. For example, you can create a SKU that contains 100 GB of storage, and charge a customer a monthly or yearly upfront fee for that storage.

To get started, click the "Products" module and select "SKUs"

You are now in the SKU menu.  From this menu, you can managed all SKUs used in the platform.  You can Add, Edit and Delete.

At the top are 3 fields where you can filter your SKUs by name, price, or the date they were added. The default settings are shown in the screen shot below.

For price, entering <5000 would filter the results to all SKUs with a price under $5000.

Click the column name to sort the data in ascending or descending order.

To add a SKU, select "Add" at the bottom.

  1. Enter a unique SKU in the SKU field. This SKU must be unique within the SKU table and to the platform
  2. Enter a name in the Name field. The name should clearly identify the SKU.
  3. Enter a description of the SKU in the Description field.
  4. Select a Visibility option.  Visibility allows you to set whether other sellers can see the SKU.
    1. Private means that nobody else will see your SKU. (This is the default setting)
    2. Reseller means that downstream SES accounts which are linked to your account as a reseller can see your SKU.
    3. Public means that anyone with an SES account can see your SKU.

"On demand" is deprecated and can be ignored.

Note: Customers can never see SKUs.

If your SKU does not include any cloud infrastructure, you can simply set a price and select whether it's metered. If metered, select the time period that it is metered over.

This is used to calculate the price of the SKU within the plan over various time periods. For example, you can add a single SKU that is metered over a month

(for example, $29 per month), and when it's added to the product, SES will automatically calculate the price of that SKU over all the available time periods.

If you do not select metered, the SKU will be included in the one time, upfront purchase price for a plan.  Here is an example:

If the SKU does include cloud infrastructure, skip the price field above. Select the cloud Provider, such as Amazon Web Services, and select a Product and Region.

Products correspond to AWS products such as EC2, and Regions correspond to the AWS regions. A calculator will appear once you make your selection.

Below is a list of the Providers available.

Use the calculator to define pricing for your cloud-based SKU. Note that all pricing for metered items (such as storage or bandwidth) is monthly.

All sliders for items that are charged hourly are based on a 750 hour month.

Note that when you move sliders within the calculator, SES automatically adjusts the price in the Price field at the top. Try out different sliders to get a feel for the calculator.

It is essential to use the calculator to create cloud SKUs in order for SES to properly calculate overages for customer usage.

Once you are done, be sure to select Metered and month for any AWS-based SKUs. Click on "Create" to complete the process of creating the SKU.
